Applications for a House are being taken.

The Board of Directors has announced that our Affiliate will begin taking applications for a house to be constructed in 2015.  The most likely place for this house will be Fergus Falls, but there is always a chance that another location may come about -- particularly if a home is donated to the Affiliate.

To apply click the link below and complete the application and mail the signed original to the Affiliate.  Do not include anything that is not a copy.  We will not return your copies, nor will we make copies for you.  Consider that your first bit of "sweat equity" on the house.  Please do not send original tax statements, insurance information or pay stubs.  Make sure that you sign the application in ink.  Always include both your cell phone number and an e-mail address.

The review process takes several months and includes a home visit and several personal interviews.  If selected for the home you are expected to participate in fund raising efforts that do include informing the public that you are the new "Habitat family."  If you would be uncomfortable with that role it would be best not to apply.  Likewise, our families must provide 500 hours of "sweat equity" on the home.  If you are handicapped and can not perform construction tasks, you will still be required to provide up to 500 hours of non-construction work.  Veteran's with honorable discharges are strongly urged to apply.

Plus, applicants should have a good credit history and steady income. Also key is the ability of the family to put in the 500 hours of “sweat equity” needed to build a house. Its more accurate to say that Habitat for Humanity “helps” people build their own homes, versus the family helping the Affiliate. That is why it is so key for people to help the Affiliate identify possible volunteers. It takes over 1,000 hours of volunteer time to build a house.  Thus the friends, neighbors, coworkers, church members, and community groups are an essential part of the process.

Unlike other housing programs, Habitat for Humanity does not build a home until it has the family in place to purchase the home. There are no “spec” homes. Thus the Affiliate is able to build a home that meets the needs of the family. With all of the sweat equity hours, all of the volunteer recruiting, and all of the normal stress of building a home, why should a family consider applying for a Habitat for Humanity house? The interest free mortgage is the key factor. On an average $100,000 mortgage, over $250,000 in principal and interest will be paid by the family over 30 years. With Habitat for Humanity the amount is $100,000. That $150,000 savings is the real reason why Habitat for Humanity homes build equity for families. That $150,000 can be invested in other things the family needs.

Habitat for Humanity is a Christian charity operating with people of all faiths and backgrounds. More information, and copies of the application are available by calling the office at 218-736-2905, or by downloading an application by clicking below.
